Balmorhea Lake is a reservoir on Sandia Creek 2 miles (3 km) southeast of downtown Balmorhea. Historians believe that this area of lake has been around for more than 11,000 years.
The lake is used for swimming, fishing, bird-watching and boating and is a short 10 minute drive.

The Sandia Springs Wetland Project is a 5 acre shorebird sanctuary, initiated in 2011 by the Tierra Grande chapter of Texas Master Naturalists. This private property open to the public for viewing. This project is a 5 minute drive from the park.
